A map load is one style request, so roughly one page view; the dozens of tile requests it triggers are not counted. Limits are per second, not per month, so there is no monthly allowance to run out of and no overage bill. Short bursts above the rate are absorbed. Development needs no API key: it is the throttled public endpoint you are looking at right now, fine for building and not for production.

What you get

Four ready styles: light and dark, each with a 3D buildings variant.
Vector tiles, so labels stay sharp at any zoom, rotation and tilt work, and you can restyle every layer in the browser.
One style URL, no SDK to install: works with MapLibre GL JS and its React, Vue and Angular wrappers.
Your key travels with the style, so tile, glyph and sprite requests need no extra client code.

Map controls

Drag to pan, scroll to zoom. Hold the right mouse button and drag to rotate and tilt (Ctrl + drag does the same). On a touch screen, drag with two fingers to rotate and tilt, and pinch to zoom.

Leave ?key= off while developing to use the throttled free endpoint. Vector tiles only, deliberately: they are smaller than raster tiles and restylable on the client.
